Webbie D. Cowart

Webbie D. Cowart was born May 5, 1937 to Joel D. and Essie Lou Cooper Cowart in Pike County, Goshen, Alabama. He confessed Christ in his life at an early age. He was baptized and joined Goshen First Baptist Church in Goshen, Alabama.

As a young teen, Webbie moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. He was a hard worker and held several notable jobs including Jenn-Air Company. He had a rewarding career at General Motors and proudly earned a degree in Auto Body Repair Technology from Indiana Vocational Technical College while working there. He retired from GM after 31 years in 2004.

Webbie was well known to many as “Worthy” and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a “Momma’s Boy” and devoted son to his mother until her passing.

Between his (DASH) 1937 – 2020, Webbie was united in marriage to his wife of 36 years, Margaret J. Cowart. He was a great provider and cherished his dedicated wife. From a previous union, his 3 children were born to the late Marsha Cowart.

He served the Lord as a faithful member and Trustee at Bethel Tabernacle Apostolic Faith Assembly where he was a member for over 40 years.

Webbie was a Mason in the brotherhood of the Meridian Lodge #33, P.H.A., Indianapolis, Indiana until he entered eternal rest on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

In his retirement, Webbie loved to play checkers at the mall with his friends. He made it clear he was the best! He accomplished the goal of learning to swim and loved attending his family reunions. He was revered as the family historian.

He was a devoted father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Webbie was preceded in death by his parents, Joel D. and Essie Lou Cooper Cowart; sisters: Denetha Smith, Dorothy Cowart, Marie Reese, Esther Lovejoy, Jessie Lou Ballard and Nonie Lee Cowart; and a brother, Nathaniel Cowart.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories to his devoted wife, Margaret J. Cowart; sons: Steven Lee (Elizabeth) and Jeffrey David; and daughter, Kimberly Jo Cowart; stepsons, Kelly Buckner (Angela) of Louisville, KY and Galen Buckner (Kyra) of Ft. Wayne, IN; six grandchildren: Stephanie, Liza, Latasha, Jessica, Elisha Smith (Shawn) and Steven Lee Cowart; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; sister, Sarah Ann Tarver; and brothers: Billy Cowart and Jo Nathan Cowart; a host of nieces, nephews, close friends and associates.
