Walter Seawood

Walter Seawood was born on October 12, 1926 to John Thomas and Mary Lee Seawood deep down in the Delta area of Vaiden, Mississippi. He was the eldest of nine children and all his siblings admired, trusted and loved him dearly. On March 24, 1945, at the ripe age of 19 years old, Walter was called to serve his country in the U. S. Army. He spent two years in War World II and was stationed in Manila, Phillippines. He received a Honorable discharge upon completion of his tour of duty. He separated from the U.S. Army and returned to Clarksdale, Mississippi to continue his education at Cohoma County College where he completed one year before excepting a position with the U. S. Post Office. In 1953 he married Annie Myrtle McClain and in this union they had six children. Even though these two were members of the Baptist faith, they were exposed to a tent meeting held by Pastor C. R. Graham. Annie was convicted of the Adventist message and, thereafter, Walter was also. With this new found faith in the Lord, they were both baptized in 1955 and became members of the Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church. Walter was ordained as an elder and seriously went about his heavenly Father's business in spreading the good news of Jesus with family and friends. Walter was led by the Holy Spirit on many occasions through his dreams. He had a strong desire for his children to obtain a Christian education and to have a better life. In one such dream, he felt the Holy Spirit instructed him to relocate his family to Indianapolis, Indiana in which he followed suit with the aid of his sister, Lizzie Mae Joseph. In 1967 he joined the Capitol Avenue SDA church which was under the leadership of Pastor Samuel Flagg. He and his family thrived in this new environment of loving friends and family. His children attended the Capitol City SDA Church School. Walter worked for the US Government for 32 years and Methodist Hospital for 20 years. Being a faithful member of the Church he served in the Treasury Department and assumed a position as Deacon. He was a strong Christian man who truly loved the Lord. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and a caring grandfather and great-grandfather.. Walter Seawood departed this life on July 22, 2008 at 8:50 p.m. He ran a good race and fought a good fight. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Mary Lee Seawood; five siblings, John Henry Seawood, Lizzie Joseph, Sandy Seawood, Hattie Ruth McKinney, and Mae Williams; his eldest son Jerry Seawood Sr., and a foster son Gene Boyd, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 55 years, Annie Myrtle Seawood; six children, Alexander W. Seawood, Walter E. Seawood, Jr., Carolyn Robinson (Joseph), Beverly A. Woods (Victor), Bruce N. Seawood (Shirlean), and Sharon Smith (Andrew).
