Verna Jean Washington

Verna Jean Washington, 74, entered eternal peace and her spirit into eternal life, meeting her savior at the heavenly gate December 30, 2019. Verna was born April 11, 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Wilbur Washington and Augusta (Grace) Washington. Verna was preceded in death by her father, Wilbur Washington; grandparents, Hobson and Lucille Grace; aunt, Annie Marie Thompson and brother, Elder John Earnest Sanders.

Verna attended Indianapolis Public Schools and later graduated from Shortridge High School. Verna attended summer school where she learned to sew and won top honors for some of those pieces though 4H at the Indiana State Fair Grounds.

Verna was a dedicated employee of the United States Government (DFAS) at Fort Benjamin Harrison for over 45 years with expertise in finance. Verna was also an active member of her union and traveled, at times, to Washington D.C., Chicago and New York through this affiliation. Verna was presented with several awards as a result of her dedication to her employer and union.

Verna dedicated her life to her family and friends and while she had no biological children, Verna shared her motherly time with her nieces and nephews. Time spent with her nieces and nephews included shopping, violin lessons, trips to see grandparents, volunteering at assisted living facilities, various parties affiliated with her union, organized clubs and churches, Ronald McDonald House, Alpha Home, and so many more opportunities. Verna made sure to share different facets of her life with her nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Verna personally loved to travel and visited Alaska, California and Hawaii to name a few places. She also loved to bargain shop one of her favorite stores was Tuesday Mornings.

You could always count on Verna for support she was very talented and intelligent and was a member of several organized clubs and church affiliations; The Montel’s, Alpha Home, Black Expo, National Council of Negro Women, and Presbyterian Women’s Mission Projects to name a few.

Verna was an active participant at First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church where she was loved and was committed to service.

Verna leaves to celebrate her life and memories, her mother, Augusta Washington; sisters, Cynthia Kerley (Clifford), Debra Ballinger, Patty Sharp (David), Lesley Sanders, Erma Davis and B. Wendy Griffin (Wain); brothers, Reginaldo-Renaldo Washington and Bernard Washington; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
