Indianapolis, IN

On August 28, 1943; the sun rose on the life of Shirley Mae Hayes, born to Mr. John Robert Hayes Sr. and Mrs. Ockreada Hayes in Indianapolis Indiana.

Shirley was raised in the now historical Haughville community in a strong Christian family. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church. From childhood Shirley served in the church; attending Sunday School, youth bible study, singing in the youth choir and the Inspirational Voices of Hope; culinary ministries; and a dedicated member on the Board of Trustees until her health began to fail.

She matriculated in the Indianapolis Public Schools attending School #63 and was a proud graduate of George Washington High School. After graduation Shirley obtained certified training as an Administrative Assistant from Indianapolis Skills Center. She also obtained certifications from the National Center for Housing Management as a Certified Housing Manager; Apartment Association as a Certified Apartment Manager; and the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials as a Certified Public Housing Manager.

Shirley was a strong dedicated employee; as an assistant bookkeeper for the Urban League of Indianapolis, IN; as a leasing agent for the Federal Property Management Corporation; and as a Property Manager for Indianapolis Public Housing until retirement.

On September 30, 1963, Shirley gave birth to her prince and best friend, Lionel Hayes. They had an impeccable mother and son bond that shined as an example of a blood bond unbreakable.

Shirley was a founding member of the Jewels Social Club, consisting of lifelong friends from the age of five and six until her earthly departure. Shirley enjoyed people, spending time with family, cooking and traveling. She was a sweet silent timber caring hard for all she knew with a smile and love. She was known for her famous sweet potato pies and lemon glaze cake that brought warmth and life to any feast.

The sunset, after fighting the good fight of faith; GOD called Shirley home to eternal rest on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, surrounded by her loving family who praised, worshipped and prayed her entrance into the kingdom.

Meeting Shirley at the holy gates are her mother, Ockreada Hayes; father, John Robert Hayes Sr.; four sisters: Patricia Ann Hayes, Johnetta Hayes, Mary Elizabeth Wilson and Iola Mae Coffey.
