Melvin L. Byers

Melvin Lee Byers, was called home to our Lord on June 10, 2021, in Indianapolis, IN.

Melvin was the youngest of fourteen children born on December 28, 1947, in Marshall County, Mississippi to James B. Byers and Florence Boothe-Byers who preceded him in death.

He attended Byhalia High School in Mississippi, and later attended Ivy Tech Community College where he obtained several certifications. He relocated to Indianapolis, IN in 1965, and married the late Georgia M. Cancer on May 8, 1971.

Melvin accepted Christ at an early age at Hamilton Chapel C.M.E. Church in Waterford, MS. He later became and remained an active member of Christian Tabernacle M.B. Church in Indianapolis, IN.

He started working at Mitchell and Scott tool and machine shop in 1982 and retired from the company in 1999.

Melvin’s hobbies included: gardening, fishing and participating in the male choir at his home church. He loved to travel, was very family orientated and a devoted father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his daughters, Terresa and Kimberly; sons: Melvin LaShon, Darrell E. and Ronald; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters: Laura Turnage, Eunice Adams, and Dorris Byers; and a host of nieces, nephews, loving family and friends.
