Mary G. Nobles

Mrs. Mary G. (Phelps) Nobles, the daughter of Green and Evelyn Phelps, was born in Jackson, Tennessee on September 6, 1938. 

She received Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Rev. Alexander Bernard of the Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church. She was active member for over 70 years. She served on the Usher Board and the Nurses Ministry under the tutelage of her sister in Christ Sister Laverne Arrington.

Mary attend Indianapolis Public School # 37 and Crispus Attucks High School. She later attended Indiana Vocational Technical College.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Roosevelt Nobles on November 11, 1958 until his departure in death in February 1996. In the marriage he gained a bonus daughter, Elander L. Phelps-Shorter and they were blessed with a daughter, Ms. Terri L. Nobles.

Mary was a Child Care Provider for more that 60+ years of her life. She provided loving care and education for her grandchild, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, friends and the list goes on and on.

She held many titles: Mama, Maw-Maw, Gram-Gram, Mama Nobles, Sister, Auntie, Niece, Big Cuz, and Best Friend. She was also known for her infamous red lipstick imprint she would leave on her loved ones.

Mary G. Nobles departed this life on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at the age of 86, years 3 months, and 15 days. Her parents, Green and Evelyn Phelps; husband, Roosevelt Nobles; daughter, Terri Nobles; sister, Earline Phelps Dean-Campbell; niece, Debra A. Dean; and nephew, Alfonso Dean all preceded her in death. 

She leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Elander L. Phelps Shorter (Arthur); adopted daughter, Mrs. Toni Hatcher; five grandchildren: Tayjuana T. Johnson, Kellita D. Morgan (Sam), JaMarkus L. Nobles, Ja’Rae D. Miles (Tia Y.) and Damawn M. Nobles; seventeen great-grandchildren: AiShea L. Carter (Christopher), DeAngelo C. Rose Jr., Tyler R. Nobles (Christina), Little Ja’Rae D. Miles, Javon A. Miles, Isaiah L. Waites, Ja’Tayvia D. Miles, Jalen A. Miles, Janiya Miller, Tia A. Miles, Tori A. Miles, Kylie Miller, Jamarre D. Miles, Jeremiah Morgan, little Terri L. Nobles, William Morgan and Sha’mari Nobles; four great-great grandchildren: Giovanni Rose, Cameron Carter, Asante Carter and Ja’Lyn Chatmon-Nobles; niece, Tina L Dean-Prince (Tab); aunt, Mrs. Dorothy M. Nevilles; uncle, William “PeeWee” Culps; a host of great-nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
