Mary Elizabeth Scrivener

Mary Elizabeth Coleman was born February 10, 1933 in Bethel, Tennessee.  She was the daughter of the late Suvella Coleman (Gilbert) and Albert Coleman.  ‘Liz’,  ‘Liz Belle’ or Granny, as many of her family called her was the second of three children – her parents and two siblings, brother Joseph Edward (Annabelle), and sister Velma Williams (James) preceded her in death. Granny was a fiesty soul, with powerful faith and a laugh that was warm and welcoming.  At an early age, she dedicated her life to Christ and was truly devoted to serving the Lord.  She began worshiping at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she participated on the usher board, supported fund raisers and did all she could to spread the word and the good news of Jesus.  Later in life, she joined the Greater St. Matthew family where she remained an active member until her death, at the young age of 86.

Mary worked for the Indianapolis Public School system at School 110 until she retired in 1984.  Granny loved to travel, play bingo, cook, sew and play cards.  She was a masterful entertainer and enjoyed spending time with her family.  You could often find her organizing bus trips or other adventures with the Janetta Club, her travel buddies, and her family.

Mary was a loving mother who gave to all around her.  She never met a stranger and worked hard to keep her family growing together.  Her home was always filled with laughter, love and was a place that many of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews found comfort and refuge.

On December 28, 1948, Mary was united with William H. Brown, who preceded her in death.  To this union was born one child, Barbara Jean Brown.

In 1954 she wed Robert E. Scrivener, who also preceded her in death.  To this union was born her late children, son Ronald E. Scrivener (Michelle) and daughter Wanda Scrivener. Also preceding her in death are her in-laws Ella Lockhart, Mattie Appleton, Mable Wells, Georgia Edmonds, Thomas Scrivener and Louis Scrivener.

Granny will truly be missed.  She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jean Brown; grandchildren, Miandra Scrivener, Jamoni Harper (Nicole), Tori Thomas (Andre), Tasha Scrivener, Daryen Scrivener and DeAndre Scrivener.  There are 6 great grandchildren and one great great – grandchild. Her nephews, Darryl Coleman, Reginald Williams (Diana), Kenneth Williams (Michelle) and her nieces, Pam Atlas, Karen Bass, April Spells (Duwan); sister in-law Lillie Scrivener Jones and a host of many friends and extended family will cherish her memories.
