Major Robert Lee Shields

Robert Lee Shields (Bobby/Bob) was born November 8,1958 and called to his eternal resting place on March 25, 2018. Fittingly, it was Sunday, a day of rest. Bobby was born to Dr. Stacy R. L. Shields and Mrs. Princola Shields in Indianapolis IN. He accepted Christ at an early age and lived his life loving and serving God. Bobby was a passionate Sunday School teacher and mentor of both adult and youth. He lived and shared the word of God with all he met. He gave back by volunteering at community events and shelters including Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving events. Bobby learned from his parents the importance of service before self. This was reflected throughout his life and legacy.


Bobby graduated from North Central High School. United States Military Academy at West Point, where received several offers to play professional football in the National Football League. Robert was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. 2LT Shields was a graduate of the Army Officer Basic course, Army Officer Maintenance Course, Armor Officer Advance Course and Combined Arms and Service Staff Course. Robert was also graduate of the Army's Ranger School, Airborne School and Air Assault school. His commitment and success in completing these elite courses revealed his character as a leader. During his career he received multiple military awards which included, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Service Medal, the Defense Service Medal, the Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab and The Air Assault Badge. 1lt Shields served as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and a Company commander.
CPT Shields was accepted at Harvard University, where he completed a Master's degree in Public Administration and a Master's degree in Education. However, his greatest achievement was being assigned the post of assistant professor in international studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point, his alma mater. Major Shields, embraced the idea of being a teacher and shaping young minds.
Bobby married Marcia Louise Heard 4/20/1984 And to this union was born Robert Lee Shields II, Bethany Gabrielle Shields (Igor) and Jordan Hampton Henry Shields (May). On November 4, 2004, he married Pamela Jean Washington. To this union was born Morgan Taylor Shields and Madison Leigh Shields.
Bobby loved being in the water, scuba diving, gardening, watching movies, and most of all being with his family and friends especially at big family gatherings. He loved his children and being a father immensely. Next to God they were his greatest joy.
Bobby's leaves to cherish his memory his five children Robert Lee Shields II, Bethany Gabrielle Shields (Igor), Jordan Hampton Henry Shields (May), Morgan Taylor Shields, Madison Leigh Shields. Four Grandchildren, Hayden Elizabeth Shields, Micah Stacy Edward Shields , Ezra Kay Shields and Titus Rynn Shields-Petrovic. His Mother Princola J Shields. Siblings Shelley Maxwell (Delbert) Stephan Shields, Diane Byers (Norris), Debra Shields, David Shields. A host of nieces, nephews and friends.


A Visitation was held at Pilgrim Baptist Church 1060 West 30th Street Indianapolis IN 46208 at 10:00:00 AM on 3/31/2018.

A Funeral Service was held at Pilgrim Baptist Church 1060 West 30th Street Indianapolis IN 46208 at 12:00:00 PM on 3/31/2018.
