Lucy Bell Hawkins

 Mrs. Lucy Bell Hawkins was born on October 31, 1955 in Pine Hill, AL to parents Nettie Ann and Charlie Powell.

“Bell’ as she was affectionately called by her family and close friends received her education through the FS Ervin Elementary School and Annie Maine High School.

As a child Lucy attended Mount Gillard Baptist Church in Yellow Bluff, AL where she was introduced to the Lord and baptized at an early age. Lucy’s walk with the Lord continued throughout her life. 

In 1973 Lucy moved to Indianapolis, IN where she met the love of her life John West Hawkins Sr. The two were united in marriage on August 31, 1974. To this union two sons were born, John West Hawkins Jr. in 1979 and Christopher Adam Hawkins in 1983. 

Once arriving in Indianapolis, IN Lucy immediately continued to be a part of the church community. She was a faithful member of Little Bethel Baptist Church before joining Oasis of Hope Baptist Church where she proudly served as a deaconess for many years. 

As her walk in Christ continued Lucy then joined Mt. Zion Apostolic Church under the leadership of Bishop Lambert T. Gates. As a highly active member of the church Lucy worked in many ministries including: The Homeless Initiative, The Food Pantry and as a member of the choir. 

Lucy always had a song on her heart and a voracious voice. She never shied away from doing the Lord’s work. 

Lucy was a dedicated worker, starting her career at Stouffers Hotel whose name was later changed to the Sheraton. After many years of service, Lucy then took her tenure to the Omni

Hotel where she worked until her retirement in 2018. During her employment with the Omni Hotel she received several awards honoring her dedication to service and her outgoing personality. Lucy truly never met a stranger.

Lucy was best known for her infectious smile and never shying away from a camera. She was known for taking pictures wherever she went, she had a huge heart and gracious generosity to all. Her home was always open, where she was known for cooking up a great meal and hosting daily prayer calls.

Lucy had a huge passion for traveling, taking yearly family cruises with her loved ones.  

On Sunday July 19, 2020 at the age of 64 the Lord called his faithful servant Lucy home to be with him. 

Lucy was preceded in death by her father Charlie Powell. Siblings Lee Powell, Noah Powell, James Houston Powell, Sylvester Powell and Sadie Gibson. 

Lucy leaves to cherish her beloved memory: her loving husband John West Hawkins Sr., Sons: John West Hawkins Jr. (Kim) and Christopher Adam Hawkins. Mother, Nettie Ann Powell; Siblings, Carrie McCord, Ella Beckham, James Powell (Thelma), Willie Powell (Stephanie), Lula McLellan and Elbert Powell. Grandchildren; Breshae, Amilian, Peyton, Kessler, Kaliea, Antwan, Derrik and Christopher Jett; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many close friends.
