Lola Mae (Sewell) Rush

February 25, 1935 — July 9, 2020

Indianapolis, IN

Lola Mae (Sewell) Rush was born on February 25, 1935 in Montgomery, Alabama, the only child to Bessie Rutledge and Cleave Benson. Lola was a long-standing resident of Haughville, USA in Indianapolis, IN. This is where she spent years maintaining the family home until her transfer to an assisted living facility in later years.

Lola professed her faith in Christ at an early age. She became an attendee of Abyssinian Missionary Baptist Church, where she would worship with her family. Lola also enjoyed worship services with one of her closest friends at Oasis of Hope Baptist Church. She was known for affectionately ending her written correspondences with “God Bless You”.

Lola began her career working at Community Hospital East in 1966 as a clinical technician and nurse’s aide. Lola would often be seen cradling babies from the hospital nursery or smiling with her co-workers. She enjoyed assisting in multiple departments for many years until her retirement in 1997. Prior to her employment with CHE, Lola worked as an attendant at Central State Mental Hospital.

Lola married her first love, President Paul Rush, on December 13, 1952. Lola remained a devout wife and mother with Paul for 28 years. During this time, Lola became a mother to four sons. Lola’s family meant the world to her. She took great pride in her boys, three of which served our country through Naval Services and the youngest participated in ROTC. Her motherly instincts and direct nature were not spared, as she was very invested in her children. Her love of family grew with the addition of her small group of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lola was known for sending $2 bills to her little family members for birthdays and special occasions.

Lola was a bit of an enigma, but definitely a lady full of zest for life. She loved to travel with friends and family and enjoyed being outdoors. She spent some of her home life outside as well, in her beloved garden where she grew organic food to feed her family and friends. Lola maintained a love of knick-knacks and greatly enjoyed thrift shopping, especially at the Goodwill stores. She spared no expense to surround herself with trinkets of love, life, and happiness. Lola also loved to be in the know! With her telephone catchphrase of “Tell me something new…”, she always left room to lay it all in her hands.

Lola departed this life to travel into eternal life on July 9, 2020. She is preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Lola (Sewell) Rutledge; uncle, Eddie Sewell; two sons, Paul Jerome Rush and Derek Tyrone Rush.

Lola leaves this Earth the gift of two surviving children, Tommy Ray Rush Sr. (Ida Suggs) and Raymond Alan Rush; three grandchildren: DeNyne Frances Rush, Tommy Ray Rush Jr., Esq (Kendra Tovar) and Leighanne Renee (Rush) Daniels (Darrell Daniels Jr); four great-grandchildren: Dejia Erianna-Akeeta (Rush) Grice (Sean Ketchum), Tyler Deimon Miller, Tyronn Germaine Burdine and LeCorrian Arlen-ReShan Jimpson; valued family friends: Diana, Valerie, Pansy, Cressie & JoAnn; and countless other family and friends.
