Linda Sue Burke
(December 16, 1953 - August 11, 2017)
Linda Sue Burke was born on December 16, 1953 in Richmond, IN to Robert E. Burke, Sr. and Doris Jean Garnett Burke. Linda lived in Richmond until she was nine years old wherein April 1963, the Burke Family lost their beloved mother, Doris to cancer. In 1964, Robert moved the children (eight of them ages fifteen to two y/o) to Bonifay, FL to live with his mother, Caddie McCants. Linda and her siblings cannot say enough about how Momma Caddie raised them, loved them and she kept them all together as a family.
Linda started school at Nicholson Elementary School in Richmond, IN. Nicholson was an integrated school, however, while in Bonifay, Linda and her siblings attended Bayview School, an all Black school; schools had not been desegregated at that time in the South.
Linda turned her life over to Christ at an early age at New Bethel AME Church at her Grandmother's church. Linda and her siblings lived there in Bonifay until their father remarried to Doris Jean West in Indianapolis in the summer of 1966. Linda committed her faith at Second Christian Church, where she participated in the youth ministry with other family members.
Linda attended both Shortridge Jr. and Sr. High Schools. Linda worked several jobs during her life, being employed for Goodwill Industries for twenty five years.
Linda met Danny Williams ~ forty years ago, who remained as her lifetime friend, partner and care giver. Linda has fought a long battle with many health concerns, starting back in 1981, two months after the birth of her youngest child Denitria. However, Linda was strong and of good courage; a true warrior and persevered through the many health challenges. Linda had a total of four children, Ronnie, Anita, Robert and Denitria.
Linda was a very fun loving, proud African American mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Linda enjoyed keeping up with the soap operas, watching TV Land and Game Show Networks. Linda loved her children, especially her grandchildren and had pictures of all her family posted on the walls of her home. Linda was an excellent cook and loved to prepare sweet potato pies for her family during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Linda always kept in touch with her family members by making many frequent phone calls, never forgetting to call on birthdays and singing to them!
On August 11 at 2:19 am, Linda took her last breath at home while comfortably sitting and sleeping on her favorite sofa. Linda is the first of her siblings to go to Glory. However, please remember that we were blessed to have Linda with us all of our lives!
