Mr. John Timothy Cummings, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed Tuesday, May 19, 2020. John was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Cummings Sr. and Lertha Jarrett Cummings on May 09, 1937, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
John, or “Johnny Boy” as he was affectionately referred to by family, graduated from the historic Crispus Attucks High School in 1955. John worked at Fort Benjamin Harrison U.S. Army Informations Systems Command as a Civilian Offset Duplicating Press Operator until he retired in 1990.
Mr. Cummings expressed a hope and belief in Christ at a young age, was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church, and later became a life-long member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, attending faithfully until illness prevented him from doing so.
John was united in matrimony with Beverly JoAnne (Cork) Smith in 1960, and became a father to 3 children: Step-daughter Cheryl Denise (Jackson) Wright, Kevin LaMont Cummings (Deceased) and Michelle Rene (Cummings) Hamilton. Although their marriage did not survive, the two remained friends throughout their entire lives, sharing closely in the lives of their children and grand- children.
One of 10 children born to James and Lertha, Mr. Cummings was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings Vera Cummings, James Cummings, Delores Wells, Cecil Cummings, Constance Sumner, Barbara Cummings, Joyce Cummings, and Ronald Cummings.
Mr. Cummings was known by many for his soft spoken, charming, and charismatic ways, his wit and sense of humor, his unique laugh, and impeccable sense of style. Loving family members and friends have called him “bold, brave, a trendsetter, non-judgemental, warm and caring.”
Mr. Cummings enjoyed entertaining his friends, loved music and had a reputation for being a really good dancer in his younger days. He was always very well dressed, well groomed and smelled wonderful. He had the gift of taking something that was thrown away by others and making it into something desirable. He took care to make friends and family feel loved and valued. He loved to shop at Goodwill and other thrift stores in the area, and those were outings he would share with his daughter and siblings.
Mr. Cummings is survived by his daughter, Michelle Rene Hamilton (Barron); step-daughter, Cheryl Denise Wright (Banji); grandson, Byron Vaughn III (Nikki); grand-daughter, Brittany Vaughn; great-grandson; Bryadon Vaughn; brother, Eugene “Tiny” Cummings; and a long list of nephews, nieces, other relatives and dear friends. He will be greatly missed. The loss is immeasurable, but so is the love that is left behind.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but shall have everlasting life”
