Jean M. Walker, age 69, passed away on October 17, 2023, with her family by her side. Jean was born on December 2, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, to Jimmie D. and Phenia E. Thompson. She grew up in Gary, Indiana, graduating from Emerson High School in 1971.
After moving to Indianapolis and earning her Associate Degree in Nursing from Ivy Tech State College in 1982, Jean accepted a position as an LPN at Methodist Hospital, specializing in pediatric care. She was employed in this field for over 30 years and was affectionately known to everyone as “Mama Jean”. Her special gift in phlebotomy techniques made her in demand by doctors, nurses, and patients throughout the hospital. She loved a good vein and was an expert at finding them anywhere on a patient. Her co-workers honored her with an “A7E Spirit Award” for her leadership and mentorship at the hospital. Her life’s passion and love was to always work with children. She was Mama Jean to many children in her life, whether related or not. In fact, one of her proudest accomplishments was assisting in the unexpected delivery of her neighbor’s baby.
On May 5, 1977, Jean married the love of her life, Alan. Through this union their first child was born, LaTisha “Tish”, in 1973; and the twins, Alicia and Felicia, in 1978, all residing in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to her husband and daughters, she leaves five siblings: Vivian E. Jarrett of Crown Point, Indiana; George W. Thompson of Gary, Indiana; Carolyn Poole (Donald) of New Braunfels, Texas; Calvin Thompson (Cheryle) of Marietta, Georgia; Donald Thompson of Gary, Indiana; and Rev. Charles H. Henderson of Buffalo, New York. She also leaves behind her 94-year-old mother, Phenia E. Thompson.
She was an avid sewer, creating items like her children’s clothing and scrubs for the job, and crocheting blankets for family and friends. She also loved to cook and was most famously known for her banana pudding, Seven-Up cake, potato salad, etc. You get the idea.
Jean became a member of and worshipped at Eastern Star Church for over 20 years. She volunteered time to the Medical and Health Ministry while developing several friendships/relationships with other members that she cherished throughout her years.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Jean Walker’s name to Riley Children’s Foundation at https://rileykids.org
