James Hurl Pierson was born December 2, 1932 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Alvin H. Pierson and Charlotte Pryor Pierson.He attended the Indianapolis Public Schools and Crispus Attucks High School.James confessed a love for Christ at an early age. He was an active member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the Usher Board as President and was a member of the Male Chorus, until his health failed.In 1950, James enlisted in the United States Army where he served for six months before being medically discharged. He then pursued a career as a taxi driver, retiring after thirty-five years of service. He was employed by Northside and Yellow Cab taxi services. He also was a custodial technician for Crown Hill Cemetery.Affectionately known as 'Sonny P' by family and friends, he enjoyed life to the fullest. A man of many jokes, Sonny P could always be found at a family or church function where he was the life of the gathering. He loved all the children and they loved him.James 'Sonny P' Pierson departed this life to be with the Lord on Friday, August 15, 2008 at the age of seventy-five years. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles Pierson, Alvin Pierson Jr., Clarence Pierson, Everett Pierson and George Pierson.He leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Minnie A. Murry (William H. Hart); sister-in-law, Elizabeth P. Pierson (wife of the late George Pierson) of Charlotte, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and church family members.
