Hugh Don Brown

Hugh Don Brown was born May 17, 1928 in Rome, Georgia to John Henry Brown and Ethel (Orr) Brown.

Hugh enlisted in the United States Army on March 4, 1943 at Fort Benning, Georgia. While in the service he traveled the European continent. He was the recipient of the European African Middle East Service Bronze Medal Award. Hugh also received a Bronze Service Medal, Asiatic – Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, WW2 Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart Award.

After the service, Hugh worked and retired from Wittco Richardson Rubber Company. After retirement he stayed busy. He loved cutting trees and doing landscape. And most of all he believed in working and taking care of his family.

As his health declined you would come into the house finding Hugh sitting in his recliner watching westerns and drinking a cup of coffee. He would say, “Hello and thanks for coming to visit”. But rest assured at 5:00 pm he would say, “Time for you to leave and when you come back, bring me something back!” with a laugh.

At an early age, Hugh gave his life to Christ and was baptized in Jesus name under the pastorship of Bishop James E. Townsend at Mt. Bethel Apostolic Church.

Everyone asked Mr. Brown’s secret to long life his answer was, “Honor your father and mother, love and take care of them” and that is what he always did.

Affectionately called “Matlock”, he was a lover of fun and jokes. He liked hanging out with his buddies and this became his retirement life. Hugh Don Brown departed this life on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the age of 94 years. His parents, John Henry and Ethel Brown; son, Wilburn H. Brown; daughters, Emma and Barbara Anne; sisters, Irene and Amy; and brothers: Joe, John Henry Jr. and Elliott all preceded him in death.

He leaves the love of his life for 50 years, his wife, Barbara “Baby” Brown; sons, Keith Brown and Marvin Tyler; daughters: Diane Bower, Patsine “Peaches” Arnold (Tony) and Tonya Posey; his Georgia family; nephews, Reverend John and Jimmy Montana; niece, Anne; sisters in love: Margaret Shaffer (John), Geneva Hudson, Lillie Pearl Williams (Early) and Annie Willis; special niece, Gale “The Boss” Younger; special VA nurse, Monica; caregiver, Robert Wilson; babysitter, Laquita McClain, best buddy, Ray Neraldo,  a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, loving family and friends.
