Hazel Louise Allen was born on November 3,1953 in Hopkinsville, KY to late Oscar and Jerdie (Davie) Cheatham. She was the 9th of 11 children. At the age of 70 years old, she departed this earthly life on September 24, 2024.
Hazel professed a hope in Christ at an early age growing up in church with her family at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, KY. During high school, Hazel joined two of her sisters in Indianapolis, IN where she attended Broad Ripple High and spent the remainder of her life.
In 1970, Hazel married the late Michael Allen. To this union they shared 16 years and the birth and rearing of their daughter Stephanie, born in 1972.
After several years of employment with RCA, Hazel worked various office jobs and pursued further education that led her to work assisting engineers at Ingersoll Rand Manufacturing. In 2008, Hazel transitioned to IU Health where she was employed as a Billing Analyst for the last 16 years.
Hazel loved to dance and once dreamed of becoming a professional dancer! Going dancing with friends was a weekend highlight in her younger days. She remained physically active and enjoyed exercising and going on walking trails with friends. Hazel enjoyed time spent growing gorgeous plants and roses in and outside of her home! Self-care was a priority to Hazel! A morning cup of black coffee with prayer and scripture, eating right, reading self-help & spiritual books and watching her favorite ministers were just a few of the staples in her daily routine. She always made sure she was well dressed physically, mentally and spiritually! Her inner beauty shined brightly the moment she entered the room!
Hazel enjoyed traveling, family gatherings, talking on the phone with her siblings and spending time with her daughter and son-in-law! Most of all, Hazel's greatest joy has been sharing in the love, care, blessing and raising of her precious grandchildren Senai (14) and Sean Jr. (11). They were her world!
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Jerdie Cheatham; brothers, Dock Cheatham and Willie D. Cheatham; sisters, Francis Mae Lomax, Emma Jean Smith and Sammye D. Sanders.
Hazel leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Stephanie (Sean) Stevenson and her beloved grandchildren Senai and SJ, Hazel leaves 5 siblings: Elwanda Mahone of Indianapolis, IN; Clarence Ray Cheatham (Betty) of Clarksville TN; Arthur Cheatham (Teresa) of Hopkinsville, KY; Linda Christopher of Tacoma Washington; Anthony Cheatham (Juanita) of Tacoma Washington; a dear friend, Ashok Varma; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.
