Florence Angelin Moore

God Will See Us Through

Known to her children and grandchildren as Mom, Ma, Little Grandmother, Grammy - Florence Angelin Hamilton Moore was a Christian woman who loved God first and was a mother to many secondarily, offering support, wisdom, and love in abundance. She was a beloved woman throughout the United States and the Caribbean because of her willingness to serve in any way that she could, whether through the comfort of a home-cooked meal, the desire to open her home to whomever needed it, or her ability to listen to many who needed a compassionate person to truly hear and pray for them when needed.

Florence was born January 15, 1929, in Franklin, Tennessee to parents Susie and Fred Hamilton. She was the 2nd of 9 children. Florence graduated from Franklin Training School in 1947 where she served as President in her class, setting the trajectory for her life as a servant-leader in her family and beyond.

Florence married William (Bill) Moore (who preceded her in death) on January 6, 1949, and they began their lives together in Franklin Tennessee. They started their family there, with son, William Jr, Ann, and Joyce before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1952. They returned to Tennessee briefly where daughter, Liz was born. They continued to raise their family in Indy where sons, Fonzo and Gregory, and daughters, Rosewitha and Tina were born. Throughout those early years, Florence was a devoted wife and mother spending her time raising her own children while serving as a neighborhood mother to many.

Baptized at an early age laid Florence’s God-centered foundation that charted her life’s course as a servant-leader in her family and the community. She reaffirmed her commitment to God’s call by getting baptized again in the Worldwide Church of God in 1967 and at the time of her death was a member of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association. She made use of one of the many talents with which God so richly blessed her by singing in the church choir. Her love for all types of music was expressed in singing as she worked in the home and while spending time with the family. God also blessed her to be creative in speaking, writing, and dance. She could do a mean “Snake Hip” which always made her laugh with joy.

Her dedication to being a servant-leader in her community where she galvanized neighbors and local dignitaries to establish Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood Association in Indianapolis that she called home for more than 60 years, created a sustainable organizational platform to support the quality-of-life for thousands of residents. Her love for people and community transcended her local community, expanding across the United States and to the Caribbean. This made her a global servant-leader, named one of the Greatriarchs of Mapleton-Fall Creek for shaping an Indianapolis community, and a recipient of a Proclamation from the State of Indiana General Assembly that was presented to her by Representative Gregory Porter declaring her an honorary Indiana State Representative.

Her humble and endearing demeanor made Florence a beloved woman to many. She served with the spirit of excellence, leaning into her faith to rely on God’s inexhaustible resources to care for her family and those in need whether it was through the comfort of home-cooked meals, providing housing for the unhoused, or listening without judgement while maintaining a consistent attitude of prayer that was dependent on God’s infinite wisdom. When most would lose hope raising 6 children without an abundance of resources, Florence trusted in God to provide. Because of her faithful obedience, God so abundantly blessed her beyond measure to support her family and countless others with the remarkable ability to show compassion and empathy to meet people where they were. Even in the face of failing health and loss of memory, she always asked if we needed anything, could she help with anything, if we had dinner, and to “be careful out there” when anyone was leaving her presence. Florence was the definition of a Proverbs 31 woman: a woman of noble character, more precious than jewels.

It was Florence’s desire to be present for her children forever that strengthened her resolve to remain with us for 96 years. She was blessed to hold her youngest great-great-granddaughter this year and spent time with many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in person and online. She laughed and cheered while watching sports and shared many “mom-isms” that are too many to list. She was a great joy to all who were in her presence and made sure to show her gratitude with a big “thank-you” to anyone caring for her. Florence was also blessed to be cared for by many. Supported by her children, she also considered her caregivers as part of her family. We couldn’t have made it without the care of our close family friend Stacey; Ade, Bunmi, Comfort, PJ, Tayo, and TiTi of Crown Personal Care Agency, LLC; Jaisa, Kimya, Mary, Micah, Michelle, Tiffany, and Tomi of M & M Caring Hands Personal Care Service, LLC; and Ashley, Carla, Danny, Hannah, Hayley, Heather, Kate, Marissa, Rochelle, Tomessa, and Verlene of Anchor of Hope Hospice. The family cannot thank them enough for the many months of loving care they provided for our mom and for us.

Florence went to sleep on the morning of Friday, April 11th in the loving care of her eldest granddaughter, Nikki. She leaves behind many family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her mother Susie Hamilton, father Fred Hamilton, brothers: Fred Jr (Juanita), Robert (Lillian), Billy (Hester, who is still lovingly with us), Harold (Ella Mae), and Charles (Johnnie, who is still lovingly with us), and sister, Colleen (Bob) Easter. She is also preceded in death by the father of her children and ex-husband, William Moore; son, William Jr; and daughters Rosewitha Suzette and Edwina Joyce. Florence is survived by brother Edward Hamilton (Rumella) and sister Lou Ella (the late John) Harrison; three daughters: Wilma Ann Hampton (Arnold), Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Markey (Bernard), and Bettina Laurell “Tina” Woodall (Jay); and two sons: William Alfonzo “Fonzo” Moore (Judy) and Gregory Scott “Greg” Moore. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Although she will be greatly missed, Florence was blessed to know God, and that Jesus was her Lord and Savior. She knew that at our Savior’s return she will rise to meet Him in the air, just as the Bible says, (1 Thessalonians 4:16). The family will find comfort in knowing that she is now at eternal peace and that her rich legacy of faithfulness, kindness, resilience, and love lives on in the countless lives that she impacted.

Funeral services will be held for Florence in Nashville, Tennessee
