Florence L. Davenport

Mrs. Florence L. Davenport, age 97, passed away Monday, August 15, 2016.

Florence was born in Indianapolis, IN. She was educated in the Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. On March 28, 1937, she was united in holy matrimony to Oscar Davenport and they enjoyed over 60 years of marriage until his passing. They loved to travel and always attended the World Series baseball games in New York City. They were the parents of two sons, Michael Davenport and Oscar Davenport, Jr., both of whom preceded her in death. They also raised their granddaughter, Violet, who brought them great joy.

Florence was a member of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church for over 75 years. She served faithfully in many ministries of the church.

Florence owned her own catering business, and her regular clients included the prestigious Eli Lilly family. She shared her culinary skills at her church by preparing lunch for the Wednesday mid-day Bible study. She was the originator of the Senior Citizen Dinner and prepared the entire meal single-handed for many years. She made the dinner as elegant and festive as she could. When her health began to fail, she still attended service as often as possible and continued to perform her sacred duties as a stewardess by standing with her walker at the invitation to Christian Discipleship.

Florence L. Davenport leaves to cherish her memory: her granddaughter, Violet Woodard of Colorado; brothers-in-law, Harold Davenport, Claude Davenport and Robert Davenport (Georgena); sister-in-law, Helen Potter; caregiver/niece, Marsha Cole (Patrick Sr.); goddaughter, Dori Corinaldi; several grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and Friends Visitation will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 from 10am until 11am at Phillips Temple CME Church, 210 East 34th Street. Funeral service will follow at 11am. Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
