EDNA M. HIGGS (WOLFE) was born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi to Ida Wolfe on November 13, 1925. She grew up in a christian home, a musical and helpful young lady, with her aunt Irene in Chicago, Illinois. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and serving as an usher. As a young child she had the privilege to
travel with a local gospel singing group known as “The Nightingales”.
Edna attended grammar school a Shiloh Church School in Chicago until her tenth grade year. It was during that time that she and her aunt would move to Cassopolis, Michigan. While there she would attend and graduate from Cassopolis High School.
Edna enjoyed caring for others and would often be found spending her time looking after other children in the neighborhood rather than playing with her friends. She would often times refuse payment for her work during these times.
Edna attended a fall semester at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. It was here she would meet Charles A. Higgs, Jr., a young and handsome ministry student. They would later marry on August 31, 1947. As a minister’s wife, she found herself following her husband, who pastored several churches in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. As the first lady of the church she would enjoy singing in the choirs and working with the children of the church. During her marriage she would bear two children; a son, Judson Anthony and a daughter, Judith Eileen.
Edna was employed with Methodist Hospital in April of 1954 as a nurse’s aide. Assigned to the maternity floor she would enjoy her days at work caring for expectant mothers and assisting with the delivery of infants. She would work diligently at Methodist for 32 years until her retirement in April of 1986. Upon
retirement, Edna was not yet finished working with children, she would continue to care for them at John Marshall Middle School as a foster grandparent and then as a caregiver at Antioch Christian Academy and Harmony Day Care Center. This would last for a total of four years before she would end her working career.
