Edith Mae (Powell) Vance Jones

Mrs. Edith Mae (Powell) Vance Jones, age 92, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016.She was born in Indianapolis, IN to the late James and Bessie Powell. She received her education through Indianapolis Public School System, and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1941. Edith continued her education at IUPUI. She accepted Christ and at the age of 13 and was baptized at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church and continued to be a devoted member for the next 80 years. Edith was a very active and committed servant of the Lord and was involved in many areas in her church. She believed in Christian Education and Evangelism. She sought out every opportunity to learn, which made her a wise teacher and mentor. She loved attending the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Regional, Midwest, and State Conventions where she served in many offices.Edith was united in holy matrimony to the late E.S. Vance in 1946, and to this union three children were born, Beverly, Edward and Brenda. On August 30, 1958, Edith married the late Charlie Samuel Jones. And to the family were added two children, Sandra and Paul. To this union they had one child, Denise.Edith started working at RCA as a press operator and worked her way up to become one of the first African American female managers. She retired in 1979 after 37 years of loyal employment.Edith's true passion was traveling and seeing the world. Family vacations, travels with church friends and family reunions are a few of the many ways she traveled.Edith leaves to cherish her memory, children: Sandra Jones Minor, Edward S. Vance (Mary), Brenda Vance Paschal (Prinest), and Denise Jones Harrington (Isaac). Sisters, Marie Smith and Bessie Bell; 13 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, other family members and friends.Family and Friends Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 19th from 10am until service time of 12 noon at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1651 Dr.Andrew J. Brown Avenue. Entombment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
