Dorothy L. Stalling was born on May 21, 1941, to Maggie and Dave Cooper and went home to be with the Lord on March 23, 2025. Dorothy was the eldest of 12 children and enjoyed spending time with her family. Dorothy confessed her love of Christ at an early age and was a member of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Inverness, Mississippi. Dorothy attended Gentry High School. She valued learning and encouraged higher education for her children. Dorothy married James W. Stalling on May 20, 1959, and to this union 5 children were born. The family moved from Mississippi to Indiana in the mid-60s and settled in Gary, Indiana. Dorothy raised their family in Gary and was a devoted member of the community. Dorothy was a faithful member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years until she moved to Indianapolis in 2014. Upon moving to Indianapolis, she was a regular attendee of Pilgram Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Dorothy loved gardening and had a green thumb; she was well known for her lavish flower gardens bringing joy to the eye. She lived a life of compassion, laughter, service, kindness, and sharing. She believed in helping others and never turned away anyone in need. She loved her children and grandchildren and went beyond the call of duty in caring for her family. When it came to her grandchildren there was nothing she would not do and often quoted “I will go to hell and back for my grandchildren”. Dorothy worked at Bethlehem Steel for over 35 years until she retired in 2012 to care for her husband James when he became ill. Dorothy was preceded in death by her father Dave Cooper, beloved mother Maggie Miller, stepfather Wash Miller, beloved husband James W. Stalling, brothers Donell Miller, Walter L. Miller, Tommy Miller, Wash Miller Jr., and Ruben Miller. She leaves to cherish her precious memories to her five children: Shirley Stalling, Drucilla Craig, Charles (Tanya) Stalling, Dorothy A. Stalling and Ricky Stalling, two grandchildren she raised Reginald Woods and Erika Stalling. Her siblings: Essie Large, Vegnora Loyd, Robert Joiner (Dorothy), Elois Miller, Delores Miller, and Johnny Miller, 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 2 budding great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, her special caregivers Tonya Floyd, Geraldine Shaffer, Kiana Williams and a host of family and friends.
