Cora M. Robinson was born the second oldest of 11 children in Mississippi on Tuesday, March 1, 1938, to Ilet Gavin and Ollie Robinson, who both preceded her in death. The middle initial “M” had many meanings- matriarch, mother-to-all, Mae, but she was most affectionately known as, "Ma."
Coming from a large family, Cora had 10 siblings, five of which preceded her in death (Greg, Annie, Arthur, Carrie, Nettie B.). Her uncle, Porter Robinson, Sr. was instrumental in raising and supporting her after her father, Ollie, passed. At an early age, Cora accepted Christ and moved to Chicago, Illinois where she attended Dunbar High School. After graduating high school, she continued her education at Dawson Technical Institute. Soon thereafter, Cora met and eventually married her husband, Mr. Harry Sanders, Jr. on January 18, 1958, in Chicago, IL, at Centennial Baptist Church.
During their marriage, Cora and Harry Sanders had five children: Michele “Meechie”, Felicia, Jacques, Yvette, and Monique. Cora enjoyed attending church, going to casinos, and volunteering her time serving others. Her love for others, afforded her the opportunity to organize a men and women’s softball team in ArtGeld Gardens that benefited young people and engaged them in positive ways. In 1977, Cora and her family moved to 104th and Wentworth Place where she became an active member of Christian Missionary Baptist Church on the southside of Chicago. During her membership at Christian, Cora served in ministry as a member of the choir and often helped to cook and prepare meals for others. In 1995, Cora moved from Chicago to Indianapolis, IN. While in Indianapolis, Cora worked in the hospitality industry for many years. In the early 2000s, Cora retired from AutoZone and began traveling. She became a faithful member of Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church until her health wouldn’t allow her physical presence.
An excellent cook, Cora was seen as a pillar and a resource in her community. This was evidenced by the candy store she had, and her support of the community. She was also known for her social nature and iconic parties.
On Saturday, August 17, 2024, Cora M. Sanders was called home to be with the Lord. She was energetic, well loved, thoughtful, strong, and determined.
She leaves to cherish her memory, five sisters: Rose, Katie, Doris, Shevilia, and Vanessa; one godson, Lamero “Tony” Parker; 10 grandchildren: JaJuan (Ashley), Stephanie (Ruben, Jr.), Deonte (Shawn), Marquetta, Chloe, Ashley, Carlicia, Sworna, Cedric, Jr., and Ashton; 20 great grandchildren; six great, great grandchildren; and a host of extended family members.
