Chadwell Terry III "Snaffy"

Chadwell Terry III was born in Gary, Indiana on July 21, 1949 the oldest of four children of Emma (Neal) Terry and Chadwell Terry Jr. Chadwell was baptized at Delaney Methodist Church in Gary and was active in Sunday School, the youth choir, and MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship). In St. Louis he was affiliated with Renewed Minds Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. William Means who was his neighbor and friend as well as his pastor.

Chadwell attended Gary Public Schools and graduated from Gary Tolleston High School, class of 1967, where he participated in football and was a member of the ROTC. After high school he matriculated to St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, N.C. where he obtained a degree in Business Administration. Upon finishing college, Chadwell enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and received the rank of Sargeant. He opted not to go into the Officers Training Program and was honorably discharged in October of 1977.

He obtained a job working in downtown Chicago, but soon found that working in an office and wearing a suit and tie was not for him. Chadwell went to work at U.S. Steel Gary Plant and was accepted in the Electrician Apprenticeship Program. After a few years he relocated to St. Charles, MO and was employed as an electrician by General Motors Wentzille. Later he was employed by the city of St. Louis at Lambert Airport. He retired from the airport but kept on working.

“Snaffy,” as he was lovingly called by his family and close friends, enjoyed sports, music, playing dominoes, and fixing things. He also liked trading and dabbling in stocks and bonds. He was an avid Chicago Bulls, Cubs, and Bears fan and a true fan of Michael Jordan. He loved his family, especially his daughters and grandchildren.

Chadwell Terry III made his heavenly transition on August 20, 2024 at 6:40 am as the result of a primary stroke on March 15, 2024 and subsequent strokes thereafter. He is preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He leaves memories with his daughters, LaTonya Kemp (Terrance) and Tiffany Rice (Ezekiel); grandchildren: Ashley Houston, Brittanee Houston, Ricky Houston, Makayla Allen, and Makenzie Thomas; great-grandchildren: Alaia, Ariah, and E’Mir; brother, Neal Terry of Indianapolis, IN; sisters, Kimberly Douglas (William) of Newark, CA and Pattalyn Taueg of Indianapolis, IN; nephews: Bryan Taueg of Phoenix, AZ, Chad Taueg (Rebecca) of Indianapolis, Jason Douglas (Michelle) of Manteca, CA, Jarrett Douglas of Newark, CA, and Brandon Douglas of Evansville, IN; nieces, Janel Taueg of Memphis, TN and Alisa Terry of Indianapolis, IN; aunts, Vera Terry Thornton and Brenda Terry Johnson of Gary, IN; special cousins: Jill Parrish, Willetta Collins, the Bogees, and the Johnsons; special friend, Carla Tolson; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
