Obituary
Augustine Louise Pemberton was born May 16, 1938 to the late Mattie Mae Mason and August Washington in Meadville Mississippi. She was the fifth child of nine children. Four sisters have preceded her in death, Florence Puckett, Ruth Jones, Lollie Hickenbottom, Ann Hickenbottom and one brother James Washington.
Augustine received her education in Meadville, Mississippi, at Lilly Mae Bryant Elementary and High school and graduated in 1956. She relocated to Indianapolis in 1965 and continued her education at Ivy Tech. She went on to receive her teaching degree in 1977 and taught in Indianapolis Public Schools #38, #26, #56, and #27 and retired after thirty-six years. Augustine held a few part-time
positions during her employment years, and after retirement she was a food demonstrator for 10 years.
She had five children Cynthia Washington, who preceded her in death, Anthony Pemberton, Quinn Pemberton, Kena Owens, and Daphne Pemberton-Polin. She was married to Anthony Darnell Pemberton who also preceded her in death. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister aunt and friend.
Upon moving to Indianapolis, she became a member of Trinity CME Church. She was a devoted and faithful member for over 50 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, worked with the Commission on Evangelism team, Craft Class, Vacation Bible School, member of the
Terry-Means Choir, the Director of the Church’s Prison Ministry. Augustine loved the Lord and had a deep passion for studying and reading God’s word. She never let the fact that she was in a wheelchair stop her from coming to church well into her 80’s. What will power! She liked to travel, work in her garden, cook, eat, but most of all loving and being there for her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Kena Owens (Mark), Daphne Pemberton-Polin (Kevin), two sons Anthony
Pemberton (Mary), and Quinn Pemberton, three brothers, Author Washington (Betty), Tim Mason(Vernetta), and Tom Mason (Donna), twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
