Augusta Louise (Jones) McAnulty
Every life is a journey, the life journey for Augusta Louise Jones began on July 16, 1932. Her early years were spent on the southside of Indianapolis near Garfield Park. She lived with her mother, Viola Jones; grandparents, Isaiah and Susie Jones; Aunt Beulah, and Uncle Curtis.
As a child, she attended Indianapolis Public School #34 and became an avid reader. She spent most of her time at the nearby Shelby Street Library. She loved school and made very good grades.
Augusta moved to the northside to live with her uncle and his wife Crystal Jones as a teenager. It is here that she began attending Crispus Attucks High School in 1946. She continued to love school and began working in a library as a page.
After graduation in 1950, she moved to Muncie to attend Ball State Teachers College, finishing in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. No teaching positions were available when she graduated so she found a job with the Indianapolis Public Library, first as an assistant and later as a children’s librarian at the Crispus Attucks branch.
This work continued until 1960 when Augusta was hired by the Indianapolis Public Schools to teach 4th grade at School #23. The following years were spent happily teaching intermediate grades at Schools #23, #83, and #37. During these years she also found her most fulfilling work volunteering with the Pentathlon Institute, an organization that held math tournaments each year. Teaching bright students with their enthusiasm for learning and competition brought her great joy! This work continued until after her retirement from teaching in 1991.
After many years with no companion, Augusta met and married William McAnulty (Mac) and enjoyed many happy times together until his death in 2008. They especially liked to travel and lived peacefully in the home they loved.
Nearing the end of the journey there had been some tough spots but more JOY than sadness. There were also many BLESSINGS, a loving family, and friends who shared many happy times!
Augusta is preceded in death by her husband, William (Mac) McAnulty, Sr., William McAnulty, Jr. as well as her parents, Viola Wright, and Cleveland Quarles. She leaves to cherish her memory her cousin and caregiver Monica Ware as well as cousins Beverly Ware, Kaye Edwards, and Vera Graves. She also leaves behind her stepdaughters Jean Smith and Patricia McAnulty as well as 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 god daughters friends, and lots of cousins.
