Mrs. Annie Mae Edwards, the oldest of nine children, was born on August 21, 1919, to Rev. Sam Scales, Sr. and Alafair Garrett Scales, in Waynesboro, Mississippi.
Annie Mae was reared in a Christian home, and she professed her hope and faith in Jesus Christ at a young age, while in Mississippi, and was baptized. Annie Mae also completed her education while in Mississippi.
On December 24, 1939, Annie Mae was united in Holy Matrimony to Frank Edwards. This union was blessed with four children: Alton, who preceded her in death, Azea Lee “Cookie”, James, and Mark. Their journey took them to East Chicago, Indiana, in 1946, where she united with Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mrs. Annie Mae Edwards was a devoted wife to her husband, until his untimely death. In 1969, Mrs. Edwards moved to Anderson, Indiana, and united with Zion Baptist Church. That would not be her last city of residence in Indiana! Annie Mae moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1979. On July 10, 1983, she joined Mt. Paran Baptist Church, and this was her church home thereafter. Annie Mae Edwards was active in the Sunday Church School, BTU, the Church Choirs, and the Senior Missionary Society. Down through the years, she genuinely enjoyed traveling extensively, throughout the United States, attending various worship services, and church conventions. Most recently, she served faithfully at her church in the Women United for Christ Ministry, and the Senior Ministry, until ill health prevented her from doing so. Throughout the Indianapolis Church Community, and beyond, she was lovingly and respectfully known as Mother Edwards.
Last year, Mrs. Annie Mae Edwards celebrated her 100th Birthday in grand style, with over 250 family members and friends attending the blessed occasion! Granny reveled in the fact that her Lord and Savior had blessed her to see 100 years.
Annie Mae Edwards had a passion for travel with her best friend, Maggie Williams, of Anderson, Indiana. She never met a stranger, “told it like it was,” and loved to dress fashionably! Mrs. Edwards adored her family, friends, her church and her pastor, TD Robinson. She enjoyed talking with everyone on the telephone and staying in touch. Wherever there was good food, fellowship, and praising the Lord, you would find Annie Mae! Mrs. Edwards had her own way of making everyone she was in relationship with, feel special. She shared a special relationship with her daughter, and often spoke of how well Cookie took care of her, living with her for over 55 years. We will miss receiving her wise advice, and her words of encouragement. All those who knew and loved Annie Mae Edwards will sorely miss her.
Mrs. Annie Mae Edwards departed this earthly life on November 11, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, eldest son and seven other siblings.
