Brief Sketch of Life
Annie Jean Wilkes was born on January 26, 1941, to Eugene and Anna Wilkes in Tillatoba Mississippi. Tillatoba is a very small town about 3 miles from Charleston Mississippi. Her dad was a World War 1 Veteran and farmer. Her mom helped with the farm and was a homemaker.
Jean attended Allen Carver High School and graduated early at the age of 16. As a high school student “Jean” was quite bashful and taller than many of her classmates. Jean was very close to both her parents, especially her mom.
While in high school Jean meet Clinton Batteast. Jean and Clinton were married October 2, 1959, and soon relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana for better job opportunities. Out of their marriage 4 children were born. In addition, Jean helped raise several foster children.
Both Jean and Clinton submitted themselves to the call of God and were baptized in “Jesus Name” and filled with the Holy Spirit. They were members of Christ Temple Apostolic Church in Indianapolis under Bishop Willie Lee in 1967.
Jean was a devoted mother and loving wife. If one ever had the opportunity to observe Clinton and Jean together you could easily see, they enjoyed a very happy marriage. Jean LOVED to garden, sew and decorate her home. (Jean actually made her own wedding dress!).
In her later years Jean took up residence at Danville Rehabilitation Center. The staff at the facility became extended family and helped with her care. After a long battle with health issues Jean went “home” to be with the Lord on June 17th, 2024.
Jean is survived by her 4 children. Patricia A. Davenport, Fritzgerald Batteast, Linda Shelby, and Clarrissa Dale. Grandchildren Crystal, Victoria, Iris, Antonio Fritzgerald Jr., Stevie, Monique and Courtney.
