Alvin James Gibson,Sr. was the fourth child born to Mary Johnson Gibson entered this life on October 16, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois at Cook County Hospital. He was ushered into eternal rest on Friday, March 14, 2025 in his home in Indianapolis, Indiana. Both of his parents and one older sibling, Lloyd Lester Gibson, preceded him in death.
Alvin accepted Christ at an early age at the Pleasant Valley M.B. Church under the leadership, of the late Rev. C.E. Burage in Chicago, Illinois. Alvin served faithfully on the Usher Board. However, his passion was music. When he expressed an interest in playing the guitar, the late Rev. J.T. Jones, an associate minister at Pleasant Valley, took him under his wing and taught him how to play the base guitar. The 1st group that Alvin played for was the Spiritual Trumpets with Rev Jones at the piano, along with his younger brother, Elbert (aka-Bae-Bae) and older brother, Lloyd , was the lead singer. Alvin also played for Nursing Home Ministries, Divine Revelations, and several. Bands.
Alvin graduated from Benjamin Banneker and attended Parker High School both in Chicago. He enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1979 where he received his GED. He received an Honorable discharge in 1985. Soon after his discharge, he met Laverne Spencer and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1987. After arriving in Indianapolis, he became a member of Pasadena Heights Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Pastor James Morehead where he played the guitar in the Church band for the Choir. Alvin and Laverne were married in 1991. From this union 3 sons were born. However, in 2008, life led them in separate directions.
Alvin was not afraid of hard work. He refinished houses, (drywall, painting, plumbing, etc), and as he got older he worked as the lead person for sanitation in the school and as a Home Caregiver.
Alvin always dressed with everything MATCHING and had a presense that would make you smile and laugh when he was around. On May 16, 2014, he met the love of his life, Edna Morelon, while both were shopping at the Home Depot. This chance meeting developed into an awesome relationship. Edna has been by his side every since that day through good times and hard times. Through Alvin’s relationship with Edna, our family was extended with her 3 daughter’s: Shiffon Hitchens (Marvin), Stacy Jones (Vandaro} and Ivery Pippens; 8 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren who called him Alli Al, Al Green, Cupcake, and PaPa.
